Activities Leadville is one of the most historic towns in all of Colorado and The Ice Palace Inn, open year-round, is the perfect place to stay during your visit to The Rocky Mountains. Leadville is surrounded by Colorado's Highest Peaks: Mount Elbert and Mount Massive, both over 14,000 feet, which can be seen from most of the rooms at The Palace Inn. Summer and fall activities include: Escape the heat and enjoy summer in the mountains, with the clear blue skies, cool evenings and beautiful scenery. You will have to come back to see the Aspens in all their glory in the fall, a perfect time for biking, hiking, riding the train or to climb Colorado's two highest peaks. (We will set out a light breakfast if you need an early start).

  • Discover Leadville's historic past at the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, www.mininghalloffame.org and follow the route of the Silver Kings with a drive through the fabled Mining District, including the Matchless Mine and Baby Doe's cabin.
  • Fish Turquoise Lake or The Arkansas River, the headwaters of which are just outside of Leadville.
  • There is also White Water Rafting, Horseback Riding, Boating, Carriage Rides, Historic Tours, Museums, Antique Browsing, Shopping, Tennis, Swimming, Running and Bicycle Races, Art and Music Festivals. Winter and Spring activities include: Winter and Spring are magical times as the finest powder turns Leadville into a White Winter Wonderland that is celebrated at The Ice Palace Inn.
  • We sell discount lift tickets to Leadville's local resort Ski Cooper. www.skicooper.com It is just 10 minutes outside of Leadville and is perfect for downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. It is affordable, friendly, has short lift lines and has some of the best powder. For more challenging skiing take a snow cat tour up Chicago Ridge, that can provide you access to over 2,460 acres of treed slopes and open bowls. Suitable for the advanced to expert skiers/riders, the terrain is located as high as 12,600 feet in elevation atop the Continental Divide
  • Pamper yourself with a stay at The Ice Palace Inn before heading out on The Tenth Mountain Division Hut System that surrounds the Leadville or relax after your trip.
  • Wintertime enthusiasts will find The Mineral Belt Trail www.mineralbelttrail.com snow-cat groomed, affording freestyle and classic Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and winter biking.
  • Try Dog sledding, a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride, Ice Skating, Sledding, Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing, Antique Browsing, Shopping and Museums that are all just minutes from The Inn.
Leadville is conveniently located to the ski areas of Beaver Creek, Vail, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone and A-Basin. Leadville's own Ski Cooper is just 10 miles from The Ice Palace.

Leadville's Calendar includes special events year-round - www.leadvilleusa.com:
  • The first weekend in August hosts "Boom Days" with its International Pack Burro Race, Parades and hard rock mining contests.
  • The annual 100-mile marathon, Leadville Trail 100 Race Across The Sky, run and bicycle at altitude.
  • December's social calendar highlight is the Victorian Home Tour, which gives the public an opportunity to see some of the homes in Historic Leadville all dressed up in their finest and promises a Winter Wonderland.
  • Crystal Carnival Celebration is the first weekend in March. The main street closes to Ski-Joring, where horses pull skiers down main street over jumps, something to see!


Mineral Belt Trail: This paved pathway loops the city of Leadville, traveling through aspen groves, conifer forests, wild flower meadows, open vista sage parks and meanders through the historic Leadville Mining District. The Mineral Belt Trail is a 12.5 mile all-season non-motorized route designed for bicycles, walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and in-line skaters. Wintertime enthusiasts will find the trail snow-cat groomed, affording freestyle and classic nordic skiing, snowshoeing and winter biking. Trailheads are easily accessable, one being just a block from the Inn! Visit the Mineral Belt Trail web site.

Unique Dining Recommendation: Tennessee Pass Cookhouse is a very unique dining adventure. Located at Ski Cooper, you will hike, snowshoe or ski aone mile groomed to the yurt where you will enjoy a four course gourmet dinner and spectacular sceanery, as both Mount Elbert and Mount Massive can be seen from the cookhouse, not to mention star filled skies as you return from the yurt. The peaks can also be seen from the Inn. We will tell you about our other favorite restaurants when you check in.
